Zohran Mamdani’s Wife Rama Duwaji Wears Palestinian-Jordanian Designer
Rama Duwaji’s election-night look spotlighted Palestinian-Jordanian designer Zeid Hijazi as a quiet, powerful statement.
Zohran Mamdani makes history as New York’s first elected Muslim mayor. Rama Duwaji, Syrian-American illustrator, stepped by his side for her debut appearance on election night adorned in all black. But when you look closer, you see an artist who understands the power of image.
She wore a embroidered top by Palestinian-Jordanian designer Zeid Hijazi, known for his designs which are inspired by Palestinian folklore and Arab Futurism. She paired this with a velvet, lace skirt by New York designer Ulla Johnson.
At 28 - the youngest first lady New York City has ever had - Duwaji shows the power of clothing to represent cultural and political symbolism.
