Originating in Egypt’s rural hamlets, the humble Omda scarf was once worn solely by village mayors, or “Omdas.” Casually draped over the shoulders of men in galabeyas, this woollen scarf carried deep meaning within its threads. Over time, however, it found its way into the everyday attire of farmers and working-class men. Now, Amina Khalil, founder and designer of the slow-fashion label Amina K., is reviving this cherished symbol of Egyptian heritage, reimagining it for the modern woman. With her newly launched Omda collection, Khalil rekindles the scarf’s spirit of strength, belonging, and cultural pride through contemporary pieces.

The Muse: Khalil draws deeply from her roots and Egypt’s rich cultural fabric. “As a designer, I really like to work with what we have, to draw inspiration from what we see on the streets of Cairo, and use the material around us in a different way,” Khalil explains. “By highlighting their beauty, durability, and identity, I believe we can offer something unique that bridges our cultural traditions with the global conversation.”

The Omda scarf has been an element in Khalil’s brand since 2015. “The Omda scarf is something we have incorporated in our collections since 2015, but this is the first time we went all out,” she shares. Previously used as trim or accents, this collection makes the scarf a focal point, inspiring jackets, blazers, pants, coats, skirts, and more. “With its diverse array of colours and patterns, this Egyptian scarf became a canvas for creativity, with each pattern whimsically named by us: Al-Ghazala, Al-Feel, Al-Saqr, or Al-Sho'la.”

The Collection Dissected: Originally woven from wool to provide warmth during Egypt’s harsh winters, the Omda scarf became a rural wardrobe staple for its practicality and symbolic value. Over time, it spread to the working class, becoming a beloved accessory. Khalil’s collection pays homage to this transformation, reimagining the traditional wool scarf in a variety of tailored silhouettes. "We had fun using the Omda woven wool material in different styles," Khalil shares. "We also used cotton melton to offer understated pieces that complement the signature ones.”

By merging traditional fabrics with contemporary tailoring, Khalil has crafted a collection that balances modern sophistication with effortless comfort. The Omda collection features everything from tailored blazers and waistcoats to wide-leg pants, offering chic yet relaxed options. “Denim is a staple we love playing with, and we patched it up to make edgy jackets,” Khalil tells Scene Styled. “We’ve even incorporated hand-beaded embroidery on our jackets.”

The Collection in Three Words: “Bold, timeless, unique.”

Where to Wear It: Wear the Omda collection to an art exhibition or a museum opening, where its intricate designs and cultural depth would resonate in spaces that celebrate creativity and heritage. These pieces stand as both a tribute to tradition and a nod to contemporary fashion.

How to Style It:

The Designer Suggests: As a slow fashion brand, Amina K encourages women to invest in pieces that will stand the test of time, in both style and quality. “I encourage women to prioritise and buy pieces that suit their lifestyle,” Khalil advises. “A piece they can wear out, take on trips, and really build a relationship with.” She emphasises balancing statement pieces, like those in the Omda collection, with wardrobe staples that offer flexibility in styling.

Scene Styled Suggests: With statement pieces like these, go minimal on the accessories—opt for understated heels, unique gold jewellery, and a handwoven bag to complete the look with a sustainable touch.

The Collection’s Stand-Out Pieces: “I love the Omda Blazer,” Khalil shares. “It’s a staple piece that will instantly elevate any outfit. Its oversized, tailored fit makes it both comfortable and chic.” Khalil also has a special fondness for the OG Omda Patched Jacket, or the Full Circle Jacket, which sparked the concept for the entire collection. “It’s made with so much love and attention. Due to the nature of patchwork, no two are the same—it’s truly a  one-of-a-kind piece.”

In the Words of Amina K… “The Omda collection for me is about being fearless, owning the space I have been given to express myself as a designer. I feel now is the time for local brands to really step it up and claim the fashion industry in Egypt and regionally.”
