Egyptian Designer Vivian Moawad Intertwines Nature with Couture
Flower motifs and embroidered lace are the stars of this ‘Garden of VM’ show.
Egyptian designer Vivian Moawad draws inspiration from the ebb and flow of human experience, Parisian cabaret, show business glam, winter’s gloom, and sunrays. Yet, one theme consistently unites Moawad’s designs: femininity. In her latest collection, "Garden of VM," the central concept of nature and gardens prevails. This whimsical collection reads like one long exhale, with greenery, floral motifs, and tulle grounding the sequins, pearls, and metallic fabrics.
THE ROOTS
Vivian Moawad, the founder and creative director, tells Scene Styled, “How nature's beauty can intertwine with fashion. Each piece is a heartfelt homage to the exquisite diversity of flowers and the simplicity of the natural world.”
While many designers have been inspired by nature, Moawad leaves her unique imprint. Her signature touches, such as modern silhouettes and the mixing of different fabrics in one piece, are ever-present. In ‘Garden of VM,’ she employs trends like bubble hems, sexy asymmetrical details, cut-outs, structured draping, and high slits.
She juxtaposes fabrics like metallic crepe with boned corsets and embroidered silk with tulle, creating small Iris Van Herpen-esque structures. Hand-embroidered lace, playful colourful threads, and floral elements make this collection reminiscent of New Zealand designer Emilia Wickstead’s SS’22 collection, imbued with a romantic aura.
WHERE TO WEAR IT
This collection is perfect for a botanical garden engagement or wedding, blending seamlessly with verdant surroundings while standing out like a dewy petal with a touch of sparkle.
THE COLLECTION IN THREE WORDS
“Feminine, graceful, enchanting,” Moawad describes. One look at her pearl-embroidered, floral-inspired, and draped pieces confirms this. If we were to add one more word, it would be romantic.
HOW TO STYLE IT
For those who love to go all out, there’s plenty of room to play. Opt for maximalist floral direction with petal heels, a flower-shaped bag, and earrings dripping like honeysuckle. Alternatively, shine bright with a diamond necklace, crystal-encrusted clutch, slicked-back hair, and bold lipstick.
However, Moawad suggests, “The simpler, the better. Each piece in itself is a statement.”
VIVIAN MOAWAD’S FAVOURITES
“Gladiolus and Tulip are the stand-out pieces for me,” the founder reveals.
BLOOMING OR WITHERING AWAY
This collection marks a shift in creative direction and production for the fashion house, taking a more subtle route than their typically bold presentations. Fresh, lush, and quietly loud, this direction allows the label’s designs to shine, aligning perfectly with their feminine, romantic style.
