Cairo-Born Jewellery Label ZM Collections Dives into Mermaid-Core
The ‘Tales of the Deep’ collection brings the ocean's beauty to life without harming real ecosystems.
A notable trend in fashion today is the resurgence of aquatic themes. Egyptian UAE-based jewellery brand ZM Collections exemplifies this movement with their newly unveiled ‘Tales of the Deep’ collection.
Designers across the industry are drawing inspiration from the ocean, from Versace's Spring/Summer 2021 collection, a tribute to the sea echoing Gianni Versace's 1992 Trésor de la Mer, to Simone Rocha’s Aran Islands-inspired pieces that highlight the ocean's allure. Alexander McQueen’s hauntingly beautiful Plato's Atlantis collection also explored the impact of climate change on human evolution through aquatic imagery.
This renewed focus on the depths of the ocean is evident in diverse fashion explorations, from Rixo's playful mermaid motifs to Burberry's concept of a "love affair between a mermaid and a shark" envisioned by Riccardo Tisci.
Zeina Madawer of ZM Collections cites a specific inspiration for her collection: “The inspiration behind ‘Tales of the Deep’ comes from the enigmatic beauty of the ocean and its mythical creatures,” says the founder and creative director.
“This collection blends reality and fantasy, drawing from the mysterious depths where legendary beings are said to dwell.”
To capture the essence of the sea in her designs, Madawer delved deeply into the myths and legends of the ocean, aiming to create pieces that offer a glimpse into an underwater realm where magic and reality intertwine.
ZM Collections not only celebrates the ocean’s beauty but also engages in the conversation about sustainability. By using cultured freshwater pearls - a more sustainable alternative to traditional pearl harvesting that often disrupts marine ecosystems - the brand minimises ecological impact while preserving the timeless elegance of pearls. This commitment is reflected in their Octavia Pieces, Lyria Earrings, and Siren Cascade Earrings.
