“Whose Dior and whose feminism?”

The Cairo Design Week's Fashion District opened its doors today, unveiling a remarkable tribute to late feminist icon Dorriya Shafik in the form of 'Miss Dior,' a contemporary woman reimagined.

The project, a collaboration between the German International University in Cairo and the fashion house Dior, has sparked a cultural dialogue between Egyptian students at the German International University in Cairo and the iconic Parisian haute couture brand, led by creative director, designer and educator Kegham Djeghalian.

"Dorriya was a pioneer, someone who needs to be revived and remembered. I’m not interested in the mere aesthetic aspect of fashion; I approach it from a cultural studies point of view, which is why much of this project was research-based," Djeghalian tells SceneStyled.

The collaboration between the German International University in Cairo and Dior aims to establish a laboratory for rigorous experimentation, reflection and exploration in the field of fashion. Rooted in Egyptian context, the project goes beyond the realms of fashion to encompass various interdisciplinary topics, including Egyptian history, feminism, civil rights, botany, Egyptology and craftsmanship.

Cairo Design Week is running from February 23th to March 2nd in the Citadel, Heliopolis & Downtown with pop up pockets in Zamalek and Maadi. For more information and tickets head to CairoDesignWeek.net
