Styled Archives: Um Kalthoum’s Iconic Parisian Gown
Worn for her first and only European performance in 1967, the gown was recreated for the Divas exhibition in Paris in 2021.
Um Kalthoum is a historical and cultural icon who needs no introduction. A celebrated national figure in Egypt and a Pan-Arab star, she came to define generations with her voice and lyrics. Although the late legend achieved worldwide fame, she performed exclusively in the Middle East, with one notable exception.
On November 14th, 1967, Um Kalthoum gave a soulful performance at the Olympia Concert Hall in Paris, France—her first and only European performance. That night, Kawkab al-Sharq wore a silhouette that had become synonymous with her: a long-sleeved gown with a high neckline, featuring floral motifs and lacework, paired with a statement jewellery piece.
In 2021, at the ‘Divas Arabes’ exhibition at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, which celebrated the lives and art of several legendary Arab singers and actresses, including Um Kalthoum, the gown was recreated and displayed for the duration of the exhibition, with the mannequin itself paying homage to the late singer’s iconic pose.
