SELECTS: Stylist Faheem Ismail Takes on the Modern Abaya
Stylist Faheem Ismail takes on the modern abaya, styling three looks that explore structure, ease, and modern modesty.
While most stylists move between silhouettes and categories, UAE-based stylist Faheem Ismail chose one lane and stayed in it. Through his styling company, The Styling Solution, and as co-founder of production agency The Studio Society, Ismail has built a practice entirely around abaya styling.
When Ismail started, abayas were mostly showcased in basic ways. "Usually styled with matching dresses and nothing beyond that," he recalls. He worked on photoshoots for abaya brands, waiting for one that would trust him with full creative direction. In 2020, that happened. "A client trusted me to style abayas differently, and the response was incredible." Since then, he's kept one principle: modesty is the foundation, but the abaya isn't separate from fashion. "I don't see the abaya as something separate from fashion; I treat it like any other fashion piece."
The balance between experimentation and respect comes down to understanding the brand. "My styling always works around the abaya," Ismail says. "The goal is to complement it, not overpower it." Some brands are playful, others prefer to play it safe. "That balance really depends on the brand's DNA, understanding that helps me decide how far I can push while still respecting the piece."
Part of what makes his approach work is timing. "In the last five years, we've seen a lot of modern abaya designers emerge," he notes. "Many of them already have an international approach to design, but they also understand how to balance that with cultural values. That makes the process more organic, the global references are there, but the cultural context is never lost."
For this edition of Scene Selects, abaya styling expert Faheem Ismail takes on three looks that sit at the intersection of structure, ease, and modern modesty. Known for his sharp eye and experimental approach to abaya styling, Ismail reworks the familiar abaya silhouette through layering, proportion, and texture.
