Monochrome Monday: The Sun Orange Edition
From Mary Quant in the 60s and Halston in the 70s, to Prada and regional designers in today’s landscape, Sun Orange continues to be present more than ever.
A vibrant cocktail of red's passion and yellow's optimism, Pantone’s Sun Orange has roots that trace back to the citrus fruit, a treasure discovered in ancient India and China. From there, its influence spread, dyeing everything from textiles to manuscripts. Yet, it wasn't until the 16th century, with the discovery of new pigments, that orange truly emerged as a standalone colour.
Fashion, ever a mirror of society and culture, has embraced orange like in the psychedelic '60s era celebrating its bold, electric shades, as seen in brands like Mary Quant's. The '70s brought in softer, earthier tones, reflecting the bohemian spirit of the era such as Yves Saint Laurent, Halston and Missoni. More recently, designers like Valentino and Prada have revitalised orange, infusing it with luxury and sophistication. Today, the colour continues to evolve, appearing in everything from streetwear to haute couture, as we see throughout this curated list from regional designers.
