Dina Shaker's SS24 Collection Redefines Femininity and Power
“Society's obsession with the femme fatale archetype can be limiting, I wanted to break away from that and redefine femininity.”
“Vulnerability is not weakness, but rather a reflection of authenticity and personal growth. When a woman allows herself to be vulnerable, she can tap into a deeper level of connection with others and with her own emotions. This vulnerability is where the true power of femininity lies.”
Veteran Egyptian designer Dina Shaker knows that true power flourishes not through external dominance, but internal rootedness. With her soulful vision, Shaker aims to cultivate self-confidence from authenticity rather than artifice. Her SS24 collection, presented recently at Portugal Fashion week, where she represented Egypt amongst African continent fashion designers by the CANEX (Creative Africa Nexus) group, perfectly encapsulated Shaker's refined yet rebellious approach. Inspired by the concept of feminine essence and strength rooted in vulnerability, Shaker crafted pieces celebrating the multifaceted nature of women.
“As a minimal deconstructionist, my designs always reflect the simplicity and beauty of rawness. By stripping away unnecessary embellishments and focusing on clean lines and shapes, the garments embody a sense of purity and authenticity,” Egyptian Designer Dina Shaker tells SceneStyled. “I wanted to create pieces for women to feel like home, to live in, freely embracing their individuality and expressing themselves authentically, without adhering to the media's narrow standards of beauty and power.”
By unravelling tailored silhouettes, Shaker’s SS24 collection conjured garments from deconstructed blazers and tuxedos to tailored trench coats and stone wash denim; reimagined through strategic cutouts, asymmetrical proportions and panelling that maintained sophistication while allowing fuller freedom of movement.
The earthy colour palette drew inspiration from nature, with tones that emanated calm and provided respite from constant digital stimulation. “These hues evoke a sense of calmness and tranquillity, providing a visual escape from the constant flux of the digital realm,” says Shaker.
Dina Shaker sought to challenge limiting conceptions of femininity with her SS24 collection. "Society's obsession with the femme fatale archetype can be limiting, as it often portrays women as solely objects of desire rather than multifaceted individuals," Shaker tells SceneStyled.
“I wanted the collection to be a multifaceted exploration of daily dressing that is sophisticated but organic. It digs deeply in the roots of the brand’s consistent practice of dressing the modern muse without losing the essence of femininity,” Shaker asserts.
Shaker brought her collection to the primary runway at Portugal Fashion Week, where she was honored to represent Egyptian design alongside fellow African creators. “The feedback from the media and industry professionals was amazing. It fueled me with great confidence and motivation to explore my brand more on an international global level.” Shaker shares with SceneStyled.
Born and raised in Alexandria, Shaker developed her stylish sensibilities from a young age. She credits her background in fine arts for continuously inspiring her designs, whether through modern art, architecture or cultural influences.
